Sources told Jeff Passan that the Houston Astros agreed to a six-year contract extension with outfielder Yordan lvarez. Sources said that the deal will start next season and buy out three years of lvarez's free agent years.
Fernando Tatis Jr.'s 14-year, $340 million contract is the fifth largest for a player who hasn't reached an agreement with a team.
lvarez played in just two games in 2020 as he underwent surgery to repair a torn patellar tendon in his right knee and another surgery on his left knee.
After a season in which he had career bests of 33 home runs and 104 runs, lvarez followed that up with a stellar postseason. He went 12 for 23, including a 4-for-4 performance in the series-clinching Game 6 that propelled the Astros to the World Series.
lvarez's contract was renewed by Houston and he got a raise.
lvarez has 14 homers and 31 runs and is tied for third in the majors.
