Alexander Zverev needed to be taken off court in a wheelchair after a nasty fall, but he was able to play in the final.

The third seed screamed in pain when he went down on the baseline stretching for a ball on the last point of the second set.

A medic raced on to the court to help the German as Nadal went around to check on his opponent.

The fifth seed Nadal was leading by 6 when Zverev walked off the court.

After a short break, Zverev returned on crutches and was given a hug by Nadal before the crowd rose in applause.

Nadal said he felt sad for the man.

He was playing very well. He will win more than one Grand Slam, that's for sure. I hope he has a good day.

It's hard to say a lot in this situation. It's not nice to finish that way, even though it's a dream to be in the final of the French Open.

I was in a small room with him in the treatment room and it was difficult to see him cry.

Nadal will play the Norwegian eighth seed or the Croatian 20th seed in the final.

Bill Tilden, who was 37 when he was runner-up in 1930, was the second oldest man to reach a French Open final.

There's more to come.
