The NHL's best player has dominated the playoffs thus far. He is feeling the pressure to perform despite the fact that theEdmontonOilers were shut out by the Colorado Avs in the second game of the Western Conference finals.
"I don't think I've been at my best here," he said. They've limited our chances. They were able to break through to the next day. They didn't.
The superstars of the city have powered it throughout the playoffs. He leads all playoff skaters with 29 points in 14 games and was a major factor in the second round victory over the Flames.
In the first game of the series, he scored one goal and had three points. The Colorado team dictated much of the game with quick transition play and rush chances while he was on the bench.
Leon Draisaitl and McDavid were put on different lines to start the second game of the series. Draisaitl joined Kailer Yamamoto and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins in the lineup.
The change did not have the desired effect on the entire city.
The chess pieces were moved around. We didn't do enough to make it hard on the opposing goalie, we had some chances but not much. We will go back to the drawing board after tonight.
Both sides were committed to better defense in the second game of the series. In the first period, Colorado had the better of the shots, 15-13.
In that frame, Mike Smith and Pavel Francouz made key stops to hold the tie.
It was three in the span of 2 hours and 48 minutes.
The ice-breaker came early in the second period, followed by a goal from Josh Manson.
A timeout was taken by Woodcroft to calm his team down. It didn't change anything.
The odd-man rush for Colorado was set up by a bad line change by the Eskimos.
Kadri assisted on all of the goals.
McDavid said that they feed off of momentum. They can turn one into three. We need to grab that. Shifts after goals have hurt us over the last few games. They found a way to score after the shift.
Smith had a great performance, but it was wasted by the city. The veteran had been pulled midway through Game 1 after allowing six goals but had put that behind him in a flawless first period that required several key stops.
He was unable to get any help from the Oilers. Colorado broke up chances and refused to allow any offensive zone time in the game. The Eskimos were 0-for-2 on the power play and had been outshot 31-22.
"I think we pushed back and generated some offense," he said. The wind out of our sails was taken out in the second period. We were unable to generate.
Later in the third, Nathan MacKinnon added to the Avs' haul.
Tyson said that he thought they played well. There is a stretch in the second where they got one and we compounded it. That is strength. The team rolls that way. When they do get one, we need to stop the bleeding.
The puck couldn't go past Francouz. Colorado started its backup after losing Kuemper to an injury in the first game. Francouz did not allow a point in his 24 saves in the playoffs.
The series moves to Edmonton for Game 3 on Saturday in hopes of getting back in the game.
We didn't win when we came to a building on the road. "Now it's time for us to regroup, look at the things we can improve on, and go out and execute on home ice."
