A recent analysis found that over 300,000 Americans might be alive today if all of them had been vaccine free. I didn't think things would be this bad.

We don't know how we got here.

A lot of the blame lies with the Disinformation Dozen and other traditional anti-vaxxers, but many people have been deceived by the fact that the virus was never that big of a problem. Several techniques are examined in my previous articles. These are included.

  • A salesman’s trick:  Using a number that is larger than the COVID death toll to minimize that death toll.
  • Ignoring R0:  Focusing on the infection fatality rate of COVID while ignoring how contagious it is.
  • Shaming: Shaming people who try not to get COVID or who are bothered by its death toll.
  • Conspiracy:  Claiming the COVID death toll can’t be trusted.
  • Premature declaration: Acting as if the pandemic is over.
  • Strategic omission:  Omitting key facts that are needed to understand some aspect of the pandemic.
  • Fanciful fiction: Just making stuff up.

The problem I will discuss at the end of the paragraph is that it was difficult to weave all of these together in a few sentences. I think it gives a clue as to how this happened.

A failed prediction?

Dr. Richard M. Salsman is an assistant professor of political science at Duke University and a senior fellow at the American Institute for Economic Research. He is a senior scholar at The Atlas Society, an organization that promotes dishonest anti-vaxxers while shunning vaccine-advocates.

He wrote an article titled "Yes, Follow the Science - in Every Field" in December of 2020.

Last March, prior to the imposition of harsh lockdowns, the same New York Times reported that public health policy on Covid-19 was being driven by the work of British epidemiologist Neil Ferguson at Imperial College of London – thereafter to be exposed as a quack. Even assuming masks and social distancing, his team of fifty epidemiologists projected that in 2020 the U.K. would see 510,000 deaths from Covid-19 while the U.S. would suffer 2.2. million.

The facts? The science? How good was the Ferguson prediction? Let us see. So far, deaths have totaled only 65,520 in the U.K. (14% of Ferguson’s projection) and 307,642 in the U.S. (13% of his projection). Not even the global total of Covid-19 deaths has reached 2 million (it is now only 1.65 million, a mere 0.021% of the global population).  For those less than 70 years old who get Covid-19, the survival rate is quite high (99.94%).  For this, dozens of the world’s major economies have been shuttered…

That's really bad. Ferguson certainly does look like a quack, especially considering that many governments based their initial response to the Pandemic on his dire predictions.

The art of deception is practiced by control freaks, charlatans, and groupthinkers.”

He said that crises are welcome for such people.

There’s a lot to unpack in these few sentences

There is a lot to unpack in these few sentences. It's all there, a salesman's trick, ignoring R0, shaming, a conspiracy, a premature declaration, and fanciful fiction, and it's all designed to make you think COVID is no big deal.

The salesperson has a trick. The salesman who wants to sell you a $40,000 car will show you a car that costs $80,000. $40,000 won't sound like much money to him. Dr. Salsman would sell cars. There is a chance of 2.2 million deaths. He doesn't reveal the actual number until after the horrible number is in your head. He wants you to think, "That's not so bad." It is only a small part ofPukiWikiPukiWikiPukiWiki 2 million. They made a big deal about nothing. Dr. Salsman turned Dr. Ferguson's prediction into a unit of measurement. He could have told you that there would be only 10,000 deaths. The real death toll was much higher than this. This would make the death toll appear large, and a COVID minimizer wants to avoid that.

The high survival rate for people under the age of 70 is only presented by Dr. We need to know how contagious a virus is in order to understand how it affects a society. There were 5 Americans who died from the disease in 2021. Hundreds of millions of Americans were affected by Covid. A small percentage of a large number is still a large number. There have been 212,000 deaths of people under the age of 65.

No matter who predicted what at the beginning of the Pandemic, rational people know that 307,642 people died. They know that 212,000 deaths is the total number of deaths. A lot of people died in a short time. Control freaks, charlatans, and groupthinkers are the only people who would feel such sadness, according to Dr. Salsman. There is something wrong with you if you are bothered by so many deaths. You are the type of person who likes to trust people. The shame is there.

He thinks that you may have even created the epidemic. The conspiracy is alive and well. What is the world's interpretation of what he means by "concocted"? He is winking at the people who like movies such as Plandemic: The Hidden Agenda behind Covid-19. Doctors have been attacked by people who are unvaccinated because of their belief that the swine flu was a hoax. They died in droves and denied the danger of the virus with their last breath. The doctor didn't treat any of them.

Premature declaration is obvious. Dozens of the world's major economies have been shuttered for this. After his article was published, people would die. It didn't occur to him that the death toll could have been worse if no precautions had been taken. Marge was scolded by Homer Simpson who said, "Well, you bought all those smoke alarms, and we haven't had a single fire."

The epidemic didn't end on December 20th. Many more people died after Dr. Salsman's article was published. An unsurprising pattern has arisen since then. Some countries allow people to visit their elderly relatives at home. They realized they had to take precautions for this.

Let's talk about strategic omission and fanciful fiction next. There is an important thing Dr. Salsman didn't tell us. We need to read Dr. Ferguson's paper to find out what he left out. The results section says so.

In the (unlikely) absence of any control measures or spontaneous changes in individual behaviour… we would predict approximately 510,000 deaths in GB and 2.2 million in the US, not accounting for the potential negative effects of health systems being overwhelmed on mortality.

Everything is changed by the omission. It didn't take into account the possibility that hospitals would be overwhelmed to make Dr. Ferguson's grave projection.

It was based on an unmitigated epidemic. The paper assumed no social distance. Dr. Salsman made that up to fool you. The fanciful fiction is there.

The last problem

The art of deception is practiced by control freaks, and his article proves this point. It is not possible for the average reader to detect the distortions in it. I read the above excerpt many times before putting it all together, and every article I read is filled with such sophistry. When writers start with a conclusion, they retrofit the evidence.

Our experience would have been the same if Dr. Salsman hadn't written this. It was a drop in the ocean of false information. It explains why a lot of people didn't protect themselves. Scientists who warned of its dangers were told by smartTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkiaTrademarkia

More than 300,000 people would still be alive if all Americans were given the vaccine. Almost half of Dr. Ferguson's projection has been achieved since Dr. Salsman wrote his article. The global death toll has risen to over 6 million, though the actual number may be more than that. Think how bad Dr. Salsman's article was.

I invite him to write a rebuttal to my argument that a million dead Americans don't matter because it is less than Dr. Ferguson projected. He can argue that 12 million global COVID deaths don't matter because they are a small portion of the global population. I would really like to read these articles.

The biggest problem is that Dr. Salsman may take me up on my offer. Some people don't agree that people matter. He might think that the world has a lot of people in it. He doesn't seem to care that a lot of people died from carbon dioxide. Facts and science are not related to this problem. Values are the problem. There is something odd about how he speaks of those who died of carbon dioxide. This is something you need to read again.

So far, deaths have totaled only 65,520 in the U.K. (14% of Ferguson’s projection) and 307,642 in the U.S. (13% of his projection).”

Imagine typing a sentence on a computer and attaching your name to it. The word "only" describes hundreds of thousands of dead Americans in a year.

Someone who knows how we got here is the answer to my question.

Who is that?
