Following the deadly mass shooting at the Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, Gov. Greg Abbot has ordered a weekly inspection of schools.
Abbot wrote a letter to the commissioner of the Texas Education Agency. Abbott pointed out the need to double efforts to keep schools safe.
Morath was asked by Abbott to come up with a plan for school districts to comply withightened safety measures. Every school district has to ensure that exterior doors are secure during school hours.
Gun control measures were not mentioned in the letter.
The Texas Department of Public Safety wrongly blamed a Robb Elementary teacher for leaving a back door open before the shooting. This allowed the man to enter the building.
The officials said the door didn't lock.
In the days after the shooting, it came to light that the district had a security plan in place that involved locking classroom doors at all times.
The Houston Chronicle reported that Abbott called on the Texas legislature to create special committees to look into school safety and mass violence. Texas' gun laws were weakened in the wake of two mass shootings.
The Texas governor wrote off the idea of having more gun control restrictions in a speech to the National Rifle Association just days after the shooting.
The Texas State Teachers Association slammed Abbott for his response to the shooting, which left 21 people, including 19 children, dead. He was booed by the crowd when he visited the memorial to the shooting victims.
There are other lawmakers who have spoken out about school doors. Following the shooting, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz called for schools to have one door that goes in and out of the building.
