Frank Gore signing one-day contract and retiring as a 49er (1:04)

They talked about how special Frank Gore was and how respected he was. There is a time and a place for this.

7:21 PM ET

Frank Gore signed a one-day contract with the San Francisco 49ers, ending his career in the National Football League where he was a third-round pick.

Gore ran for 48 yards on 14 carries in the New York Jets' victory over the Cleveland Browns. The 48 rushing yards gave Gore 16,000 rushing yards in his 16-year playing career.

Gore is the 3rd all time in rushing. His selection as one of four running backs on the All-Decade team of the 2010s and five Pro Bowls are some of the quick hit parts of his potential Hall of Fame resume.

The phrase "Next stop Canton" is thrown around when a player of Gore's production calls it quits. As a voter for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, I'm pretty sure Gore will be in there.

Will Gore become a first baseman in the Hall of Fame? It depends on who else is in the running. Gore and Larry Fitzgerald will be eligible for the first time in the Hall of Fame if Fitzgerald doesn't attempt a comeback. Gore's clock began from his final season.

Start with the big items. The top 16 all-time rushers in the history of the National Football League are currently in the Hall of Fame. John Riggins and O.J. Simpson are in the Hall of Fame.

The only running backs who are not in the Hall of Fame are Gore and AdrianPeterson. Tom Brady, Joe Thomas, and marshal Yanda were the other four players on the offense who were unanimous selections to the 2010 All- Decade team.

If he doesn't play any more games, he's going to be eligible for the Hall of Fame.

If Gore doesn't make it as a first-time eligible player and he andPeterson appear on the Hall of Fame ballot at the same time, there is a chance that they split votes. This has happened many times over the years at a variety of positions, most recently at the wide receiver position where Tim Brown, Andre Reed, and Terrell Owens were involved.

Reed was a finalist eight times, Brown six times and Owens three times.

Two running backs were elected to the Hall of Fame in the same year, for the first time in a decade. Prior to that class, it hadn't happened since 1994.

The list of all-time rushing leaders is more indicative of Hall of Fame consideration than the list of all-time passers. The league doesn't like running backs and no one is going to get to 12,000 yards anytime soon.

Among the league's top 12 all-time rushers, only Tomlinson and Gore played after 2005. Only four of the top 16 all-time players have played a game since the start of the season.

Hall of Fame discussions are always emotional because the math is so easy. Every team in the league has at least four players who aren't in the league's Hall of Fame.

A maximum of five modern era slots are available for the Hall class each year. If no new players were added to the ballot, it would take 28.6 years to deal with that group.

The whole first-ballot thing is what makes the social media world so angry about the Hall.

The gold jacket for John Elway is the same as it was for Floyd Little who waited almost four decades to be in the Hall of Fame. The busts of Hall of Famers selected in their first year of eligibility are not used with different bronze.

Some of the players who were not selected in their first year of eligibility include Willie Davis, Joe Namath, Willie Lanier and Alan Page.

The case for the Hall is consistent. He suffered two knee tears in college before becoming one of the league's most durable players for almost 20 years. Some will say that Gore finished among the league's top five runners in only one season and never had the chance to play with a Super Bowl winner.

Five years from now, all of that will be done. Today is Gore's 241st regular-season game, nine 1,000-yard seasons, 11 900-yard seasons and nine 1,000-yard seasons. It was a rare career by a player who started his career in that spot.
