Tua Tagovailoa pushes back on arm strength criticism (0:40)

Tua Tagovailoa talked about the skepticism regarding his arm strength. There is a time and a place for it.

Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is starting to let his guard down, according to head coach Mike McDaniel.

Tagovailoa made clear how he felt about the skepticism regarding his arm strength by completing two deep passes to Hill.

"If you've seen the third-to-the-last play we had, I think that may have been a touchdown to Tyreek," he said after practice. We scored two plays after that if not. You want to write that down in a way that's easy to read on social media or something.

One of the criticisms levied against Tagovailoa since he entered the league in 2020 is his perceived ability to push the ball downfield.

In the NFL, Tagovailoa led the league in completion percentage on passes at least 25 yards downfield, but he only attempted 18 of them.

He claimed in an interview with Muscle & Fitness magazine that his lack of downfield passing was due to playcalling.

He said that he has seen improvements in being able to push the ball down the field. It's just practice. I wasn't able to push the ball down the field because we didn't have plays that would push the ball down the field. A lot of plays were intended for one person. The play may be dead or open.

It is a bit different now. My second year was different than my first, and this year will be different as well. I feel more confident pushing the ball down the field. It is going to be great.

In that same interview, Tagovailoa said he spent a lot of time working on his arm strength and mobility in the off-season.

The former No. 5 overall pick said he's aware of what people say about his arm strength, mostly because the Dolphins' communications department told him to prepare for what local media might ask him about.

He had previously refused to comment in detail about how those critiques made him feel.

Tagovailoa said it was just zone that out. We go out to practice. They are not out here practicing with us, they are working hard.

I'm not sure if you recorded that last one for Tyreek. That looked like money to me.

Since arriving in Miami, Tagovailoa said this is the most open he's been with the media, and his comfort level stems from the efforts of McDaniel to get him to open up.

Even if it's a brief conversation, Tagovailoa said that McDaniel likes to pop in to chat. He said he's never been around a coach like that.

His teammates have noticed a change in him. He's coming in his own in that area. He's been a great coach. His guard has been let down. We have been able to keep his confidence high while we correct him and get this game better, which is the ultimate goal for everyone.
