According to a source, Ryan Fitzpatrick, the enigmatic quarterback out of Harvard who brought his "Fitzmagic" to the NFL for nine teams, is retiring.

He sent a text to his friends. The first report about Fitzpatrick's retirement was from the NFL Network.

Fitzpatrick suffered a hip injury in the second quarter of Washington's season opener and had to have surgery.

He signed a one-year deal with Washington.

In 17 seasons, Fitzpatrick has thrown for 34,990 yards and 229 touchdown passes. He started his career as a seventh-round pick of the St. Louis Rams and has gone on to play for 13 different teams in his career.

He has started every game for the nine teams he has played for. Fitzpatrick didn't make the playoffs during his career.
