Burley: Frankfurt are deserved winners of the Europa League (1:21)

Rangers took the game to penalties, but Craig says that Frankfurt were the better team over 120 minutes. There is a time and a place for it.

European soccer is in a weird place. The Super League saga of a year ago served as a reminder that clubs are not satisfied with their money and that the richest league and the richest clubs continue to distance themselves from their peers.

European soccer's governing body has done the bare minimum in reining in spending that was caused by a worldwide epidemic. While blaming patrons, it has failed to execute basic ticket-taking plans. It will blow any goodwill the moment it arrives despite being a lesser-of-evils main character.

Increasing salaries and the influence of petrol states have made it difficult for well-run clubs to rise in the ranks. As the sport becomes more player friendly, it becomes less fan friendly.

Live games and replays of MLS, LaLiga, and the Bundesliga are available on the ESPN+ streaming service.

The game itself is more watchable than ever. Real Madrid's extra-time comeback against Manchester City was one of the highlights of the last three rounds of the European Championship.

The bad will overtake the good if we don't celebrate the good in a sport. With the season over, I'm going to take a look back at some of my favorite stories from the year.

1. Eintracht Frankfurt vs. Rangers

Holt uns den Pokal. Get us the cup. It was a sign above the ultras section at the May 8 game. The fans were not paying attention. They drank and sang the whole match even though they are from Germany. There were bigger things on the way.

The passion of a club's supporters, the volume of individuals who love their team with full heart, mind, body and soul and travel absolutely anywhere to see them play, there's a chance that both Eint Two beloved clubs were offered a chance at a major European trophy and a spot in next season's Champions League when they met in the final of the Europa League.

After a cautious final that saw both teams focus on avoiding disaster, the Eagles, die Adler, won on penalties.

There were epic celebrations afterwards.

In the previous six Europa Leagues, England's "Big Six" clubs had occupied five of 12 spots in the finals, while Spanish powerhouses had taken one and the other. In the past four years, Man United, Inter and Atletico were knocked out of the tournament after finishing third in their groups in the competition.

It can sometimes feel like these teams are trying to win the tournament more than they want to, like they are trying to make the best of a bad situation. Is it possible that Eintracht and Rangers are also included? They were interested in being there. The Eintracht fans followed their team to London after they defeated West Ham in the semifinals. Rangers defeated two of Germany's top four teams to reach the final. The teams and their fans wanted this specific trophy very badly, and it created the best night you'll ever see in a European competition. In an era of escalating differences between the haves and have- nots, and also the haves and have- somes, this match showed the massive potential of a competition.

The new arrangement for the three major continental tournaments will be called the Swiss Model. The tournament's later rounds will feature only clubs that really want to be in that tournament since teams won't be dropped down into the knockout rounds anymore. It could increase the odds of more match-ups.

One can only hope

2. Liverpool vs. Manchester City

While acknowledging that soccer has an inequality issue at the moment, we are also acknowledging that these two teams put on a transfixing show in 2021.

It was possible that the pair would end up playing in the FA Cup finals as well as the premier league final. The draw of the FA Cup pits the two teams against each other in the semis, and Real Madrid's late heroics spoiled both teams' chances of making the group stage.

The teams that dominated much of the European season did not win a single trophy. There was shame and horror.

play

Manchester City won their fourth premier league title in a row.

The race was great. When City fell behind 2-0 to Villa at home, it seemed as if the Reds would finish their comeback and win the title. Instead, Ilkay Gundogan scored in the 76th minute against Villa, Rodri scored in the 78th and after brilliant play by Kevin De Bruyne, a Gundogan tap-in gave City three goals in six minutes and locked down a fourth league crown.

Championship Sunday, Survival Sunday, whatever you want to call it, lived up to all possible dramatic hopes once again.

3. AC Milan's organically-built Scudetto

The Rossoneri brought in a number of new players in the last year, including a player from Atalanta and a player from Real Madrid. Fikayo Tomori and Mike Maignan were added in 2021. It took 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884 888-349-8884

Milan's victory in the Italian football league boded well for their future.

It's amazing to see a plan in front of you.

It makes sense that the same capital investment firm that invested in the owners of the Reds would also invest in the Milan club. It's possible that no two clubs in Europe have hit on a higher percentage of player acquisitions. Milan built a winner from free transfers and a good youth team, but over a short period of time, the club put together one of the most exciting young core rosters in Europe.

After finishing second in Serie A for the first time in 2012 and winning their first league title in three years in the spring, the Rossoneri are now considered one of the best teams in Italy.

The club decided to keep Pioli in place after rumors of a dismissal. The hot streak has lasted for most of the last two years. Everyone mentioned above is 26 years old or younger and could continue to improve in the years ahead, even though Kessie is departing for Barcelona and hasn't been able to register him yet. They could move up Europe's overall ranking if they pick their transfers well.

4. Christopher Nkunku's rise

It has been easy to get excited about Nkunku. The attacker combined five goals with 13 assists in his debut season for RB Leipzig, despite being acquired from Paris Saint-Germain. He was set back by injuries in 2020-21, but he was still just 23 at the start of this season and with RBL's additions of the prolific Andre Silva and creative Dominik Szoboszlai, it was safe to assume a big year was coming for the Frenchman.

There's a beautiful game here. You can watch tournaments and teams.

There is a Sunday in June.

โ€ข Wales vs. Scotland/Ukraine (12 p.m. ET)

There is a difference between a big year and an enormous one, and 31 goals and 16 assists is the latter. Nkunku scored a hat trick against Manchester City on the way to seven goals, and he led RBL to its first major trophy, scoring the tying goal in the final despite being a man down, then converting his penalty.

With the way RBL ended the season, it's fair to say that they are a good team. Time will tell if RBL can keep him in the red and white shirt for another year after Nkunku's ridiculous exploits put him on the radar of a few well-monied Premier League teams.

5. Sadio Mane's nearly perfect half-year

The winning kick in the Africa Cup of Nations final was scored by Sadio Mane.

After beating Egypt on penalties to qualify for the World Cup, he did the same thing again.

In April, when the Reds needed an equalizing goal against Manchester City to keep their title hopes alive, they got it. He drove the Reds to the FA Cup final twice in less than a week.

Who scored two goals in the semifinals of the European soccer competition? That's right, mane. Who scored the game-winner against Villa on May 10 to keep the Reds' title hopes alive and who did the same against Wolves on the last day of the season? That's right, mane.

play

Craig says he doesn't understand why Sadio would leave for a German club.

It was a frustrating season for the 30-year-oldLiverpool legend. After scoring 22 and 18 goals in the past two seasons, he had only seven before a late hot streak. It was fair to wonder if he was going to get crowded out of the lineup as the next generation of young stars were added. He put together a masterpiece before leaving the club.

It was a great way to leave.

6. Amazing relegation escapes

You can count on a run of "Man, it would be amazing to have promotion and relegation in American sports" every May. I used to do a simulation of 15 years of college football being demoted to the second tier. The only thing you have to do is watch a team celebrating a 17th-place finish like it just won the European Championship, and you will understand the power of the league.

It was one of the most dramatic battles of the year.

The club has been in England's top division for almost 70 years, but spent much of the season at the precipice of dropping to the second tier. On May 19 they came back from 2-0 down to beat Crystal Palace and win their safety.

play

The comeback against Crystal Palace ensured that the Toffees will play in the premier league.

The gain was close to that of the other team. After 17 years away from the premier league, Leeds returned in 2020-21 and are currently in the top half of the table. They were less potent in attack and less prepared to avoid getting sliced up in transition due to the injuries to Patrick Bamford and KalvinPhillips. That's baaaad, that'sTranslation.

The venerated Bielsa left the club on February 27 due to an increasing string of blows. Marsch engineered a nice five-game run that appeared to guide them to safety, but another string of losses in early May meant their status was in doubt heading into the final match day. They kept this redemption story going by winning a game and losing one.

VfB Stuttgart has spent most of the last decade in yo-yo mode since winning the German Bundesliga in 2007. The Reds were in or near the drop zone for much of the season, but a 2-2 draw at Bayern on May 8 kept them within reach of safety, and then Wataru Endo's last-minute goal against Koln on the final day of the season kept them out of the bottom

Mallorca had been promoted or demoted for five years in a row in Spain's LaLiga. They tied Sevilla, then beat Rayo Vallecano and Osasuna, and finished with 39 points. On the last day of the season, Granada drew with Espanyol and lost to Real Betis. A single goal would have been enough to keep them up.

There is also Salernitana. In their first season back in Italy's Serie A for more than two decades, the Granata spent most of the campaign in free-fall and almost got kicked out of the league in the middle of the season due to ownership issues. They were nine points from safety at the time. They won three games in a row. After a draw with Atalanta and two more draws, they needed to match Genoa's result to finish off a great job.

Salernitana had to stay up even though Genoa lost to Bologna. It was a weird end to the season.

7. The UEFA Europa Conference League (no, seriously)

The general online reaction to Bodo/Glimt winning the first two games of the first leg of the quarterfinals of the inaugural U.S. European Championship was mockery. "The Special One" losing to a minnow in a tournament is hilarious.

The margin of defeat in Bodo/Glimt's first match was particularly upsetting, but this reaction was a bit frustrating since Bodo/Glimt is a really well-run club. They won the Eliteserien title in 2020 and followed it up with another win the next year. They made the Conference League group stage and stomped Celtic in the first knockout round. The Conference League could turn into an incredible proving ground for both interesting and well-run clubs from smaller leagues, as well as former European powers who have been cast adrift as money has flowed elsewhere.

play

The trophy adds to Jose Mourinho's legacy, according to the man.

The Conference League was great to watch once the teams that didn't care to be there were removed.

Out of 23 knockout-stage ties, 11 featured at least six combined goals over two legs and 10 were decided by one goal or penalties. Two former European champions met in one semifinal, while the other had two clubs from the Big Five leagues. One of the most enjoyable teams to watch all season was PSV Eindhoven, who reached the quarterfinals along with Bodo/Glimt.

If we don't want to tell a lot of stories about the big clubs, the Conference League could be a good place to start. Don't count me out.

8. Union Saint-Gilloise's near-fairy tale

The most stirring story of the season ended up being short-lived. For the first time in more than 50 years, Union Saint-Gilloise was playing in the Belgian top division.

During the course of the season, USG lost just twice and held off Club Brugge to win the title. The structure of the playoffs was too much. In a six-game round-robin against the other top four, the team ran out of gas, but taking just one point allowed Club Brugge to catch them and win the league.

The squad is already getting dismantled even though it will still play in the qualification stage. In January, the Seagulls took Undav back for the rest of the season, and this week, Anderlecht brought in Mazzu. This was a hell of a run to follow the start of the story. For much of the spring, their matches were very popular.

9. The Cardiac Blancos of Real Madrid

This season's plucky underdog tale does tell us a little bit about the current spending clout of the Premier League, but Carlo Ancelotti's squad was joyous and inspiring for much of the competition, and that deserves re-interpretation.

A likely round-of-16 loss to Paris Saint-Germain was turned into a victory by Benzema's 20-minute hat- trick.

You had a Benzema hat-trick, and Luka Modric set up Rodrygo to tie the game in Madrid, after the Blues had taken the lead. Benzema won it in overtime.

play

They talked about Thibaut Courtois' performance for Real Madrid in the finals of the European Championship.

Real Madrid lost in the semifinals for the second year in a row. After a chaotic 4-3 loss at Manchester City, they fell two goals back, only to get two more goals from Rodrygo. Benzema put them into the final.

They had an all-time run of comebacks before Vinicius Junior's goal. It may have been the least likely of Real Madrid's European titles, but it may be the most memorable.

10. Nottingham Forest's return to the Premier League

I went to England for the first time with my mom. I already enjoyed international soccer, but this was my first real opportunity for exposure into the world of club soccer and when I discovered that there was a team namedNottingham Forest and that they were third in the premier league, with fun, young attackers and a captain nicknamed "The Captain", I I chose them as my English team. My parents have pictures of me wearing a jersey at tennis tournaments, so I bought a jersey.

Almost nothing good happened to the club over the next two decades. After a dead-cat bounce, they were demoted to the second tier. They were in the third division for a while and every time they seemed to get better, things stopped. They got back into the league in 2010 but lost in the playoffs. They played well for most of the year but went winless in their last six matches and finished 17th.

Forest's long-suffering fans can finally celebrate as their team is back in the Premier League.ย Luke Brennan/Getty Images

After earning just one point from their first seven matches, Forest hired Steve Cooper and he led them to six more league victories. They got the good bounces they had for a long time, and they finished fourth in the league and advanced to the playoffs.

The keeper made three penalty saves after blowing a two- goal lead in the semifinals. They got two lucky breaks when potential penalties against them weren't given in the final of the Wembley final.

For the first time in more than two decades, the two-time European champ are back in the top flight. Three of the nine Forest players who played over 3000 minutes last season were loanees. Lewis Grabban, their No.2 scorer, is no longer with the club. The club will likely see a lot of moves in the coming weeks as owner Evangelos Marinakis promises to spend.

At a later date, that's something to worry about. It took a long time for forest to return.
