The audio recordings come from an unnamed Ukrainian intelligence agency, which eavesdropped on the phone calls.
The excerpts of the calls were published on Monday.
A senior Russian officer can be heard bad-mouthing Russia's minister of defense Sergei Shoigu. In April, it was reported that Shoigu was one of the few Kremlin insiders who made the decision to invade Ukraine.
He says in the recording that Shoigu is incompetent.
The officer was Lieutenant Colonel Vladimirovich Vlasov.
Alexander Dvornikov, Russia's top commander in Ukraine, is called a "brainless fuck" and a "complete and utter imbecile" in the recordings.
The New York Times reported on Tuesday that Dvornikov hasn't been seen for two weeks, leading some US officials to think that he may have been relieved of his post.
According to Radio Svoboda, Vlasov was talking to Colonel Vitaliy Kovtun. According to the recordings, Kovtun refers to both Shoigu and Putin as a "fucked cunt".
Both men were contacted by Radio Svoboda.
Kovtun threatened to report the journalist to Russia's security agency after taking the phone call.
Vlasov didn't offer a comment when he answered the phone. He wouldn't answer follow-up calls.
