The COO of Meta is stepping down.
Meta, the company formerly known as Facebook, has been built largely by Sandberg since 2008, and she is the right-hand woman to Mark. It marks the end of an era, according to a comment by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
Meta has been at the center of a number of controversies over the years, including privacy violations, dissemination and propagation of misinformation and hate speech.
The debate around social media has changed beyond recognition since those early days. It hasn't always been easy. It should be difficult. The products we make have a huge impact, so we have the responsibility to build them in a way that protects privacy and keeps people safe. Have a great summer!
She wrote about her time at Meta. When she joined the team, she was the 38 year old ad executive from Google, and he was the 23 year old wunderkind. It was a lucky match. When Meta went public, they both became billionaires, because of the way they monetized the social media platform.
When she first joined Meta, she was a mother of two young children and used her power and influence to speak up about the challenges that women face in the workplace. Although she is a vocal advocate of women's initiatives and has published several books and founded a non-profit on the subject, she has also been criticized for being rigid and elitist.
Over the past 14 years, she has been a mentor to him. The democracy-threatening crises that she has helped navigate over the years were not included in the announcement. Russia used Meta and other social media platforms to spread fake news in the 2016 presidential election, the Cambridge Analytica scandal collected data from Meta users without their knowledge, and the more recent leak of confidential information.
She said that she would focus more on her foundation and philanthropic work after leaving the Meta board. She will remain as COO until the fall.
