After a convincing win against Scotland on Wednesday, the Ukrainian soccer team is just one win away from a spot in the World Cup.
The European play-off final will be played in Wales on Sunday after Wales defeated Scotland in Glasgow.
The winner of the game between Wales and Ukraine will qualify for the World Cup in the winter, where they will face the U.S. in the opening game.
The game against Scotland was delayed more than two months from its original March 24 match date, and marked the first competitive game since Russia launched its invasion.
The players in the starting lineup of the game wore the country&s blue-and-yellow flag and the stadium displayed a call for peace on its video board.
Soccer is the most popular sport in Ukraine, but the national team went on hiatus and the domestic league canceled its season after Russia invaded the country. The national team took part in a series of non-competitive games last month as part of the Global Tour for Peace in order to get players fit for the World Cup. Two of the most successful soccer teams in eastern Europe were on the tour.
In 2006 the country made it to the quarterfinals of the World Cup.
Poland and Ukraine co-hosted the 2012 European Football Championship. Spain defeated Italy in the final of the tournament at the Olympic Stadium.
The United States will face England and Iran in the return of the soccer World Cup.
The play-off between Scotland and Ukraine may not happen in June.
