A jury in Fairfax, Virginia, ruled Wednesday that Heard defamed Johnny Depp in an op-ed she wrote in which she described herself as a public victim of domestic abuse.

The jury deliberated for less than two full days before they decided that the claims made by Heard in her Washington Post op-ed were false.

The judge capped the award at $350,000, in line with state law, despite the fact that he was awarded $10 million in compensatory and $5 million in punitive damages.

Heard was awarded $2 million in compensatory damages and no punitive damages for her claims of abuse, which were called a hoax by her representative.

The jury found Heard's statements in her op-ed met all the qualifications for defamation against Heard, including that she acted with malice, and that her statements were made about him even though she didn't name him.

Key Background

Lawyers for the actor argued that the insinuation that he abused Heard cost him his film career. The $100 million countersuit was filed by Heard after her lawyer said her allegations were not real. She filed a restraining order against him after they divorced. Dozens of witnesses, including Heard and Depp, took the stand during the trial to tell two completely different stories about the relationship between the two. Heard's attorneys and witnesses said that Depp had been physically, emotionally and sexually abusing her and that his frequent bouts of anger were caused by his drug and alcohol use. He denied ever laying a hand on her, as Heard's team painted her as the aggressor and abuser in the relationship. Kate Moss and Heard's sister were among the witnesses. Thousands of viewers watched the trial live every day, and it lasted six weeks.
