Following last week's mass shooting at a Uvalde elementary school, Texas Governor Greg Abbott called for the Texas legislature to immediately convene committees.
The governor sent a letter to Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, who heads the Senate, requesting that each convene a special legislative committee to study five topics: firearm safety, school safety, mental health, social media and police training.
The committees were tasked by Abbott to review previous legislative actions and evaluate state resources to make recommendations to prevent future school shootings.
Abbott's office did not respond to a request for comment from Forbes asking for clarity on what he views as firearm safety and what actions he would be willing to take on the issue.
Abbot said at a news conference last week that tougher gun laws are not a real solution in the wake of mass shootings.
In the letter, Abbott said that Texas must reexamine the twin issues of school safety and mass violence.
Abbott backed down from taking action after he voiced support for limited gun control measures. The Santa Fe High School shooting left ten people dead and Abbott supported a law that allowed courts to restrict firearm access to people who were deemed to be a danger to others. Background checks were expanded after 23 people were killed in a shooting at an El Paso Walmart.
Legislation allowing Texans to carry handguns without training or a license has been signed by Abbott over the past few years.
Nineteen children and two teachers were killed in a shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde on May 24. Democrats, including President Joe Biden, have demanded new gun control measures in response to the shooting, while many Republicans say the solution is to tighten security at all schools. The police response to the May 24 shooting has been blasted by both sides. After learning the shooter remained in the school building for up to an hour after he started shooting, Abbott said he waslivid. The governor shared inaccurate information about the police response after the shooting.
