A major shock was announced late Tuesday night by the budding PGA Tour competitor who said he would play in the first LIV Golf event next week.
The golf world was shocked by the emergence of former top-ranked golferDustin Johnson.
Johnson, the 13th-ranked golfer in the world, was included on the list of 42 players for the first-ever tournament in London.
The 2020 Master's champion and his family are likely to join the new league, according to his agent.
Johnson will not play in a PGA Tour tournament and the PGA may impose punishment on him if he plays in the LIV Golf tournament next week.
The Royal Bank of Canada, a personal sponsor of Johnson and sponsor of that tournament, said in a statement to multiple outlets that it is extremely disappointed in the golfer.
Johnson's other top sponsors did not respond to requests for comment.
In February, Johnson said that he was fully committed to the PGA Tour. Other notable names competing in the first tournament of LIV Golf are Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter. The long-time sponsor of Westwood dropped him last month because he wanted to join LIV Golf. LIV Golf, led by Greg Norman, rose to national attention in February when Phil Mickelson stirred controversy for defending his interest in joining the league despite its shady financing, saying the money outweighed the human rights abuses of the Saudi government. Several of the golfer's sponsors cut ties with him, who has remained out of the spotlight since.
Donald Trump's National Doral Golf Club in Miami will host the final LIV Golf tournament in October. According to Golf.com, Trump posted in support of the new league on his TruthSocial platform last week, writing that the PGA has been taking advantage of the players for many years.
