The three-year extension was signed by St. Louis.

The hockey world was surprised by the appointment of St. Louis as the new head coach of the Montreal Canadiens, who went from playing in the Stanley Cup Final in 2021 to last place in the NHL in 22 years.

St. Louis had never been behind an NHL bench and had only been a special teams consultant for the Blue Jackets.

The Hockey Hall of Famer was a college player at the University of Vermont and the Montreal general manager had known him for a long time.

Under St. Louis, the Canadiens had a 14-19-4 record. After St. Louis was hired, he was able to turn around the fortunes of several players, most notably the highly-hyped Cole Caufield, who had 35 points in 36 games.

Gorton said that Martin showed he has the required qualities to lead the team in the right direction. We believe that Martin is the right person for this job because he thinks the game at a high level.

The team was happy to keep St. Louis.

Martin is a proven leader with a deep understanding of and passion for the game of hockey. His arrival brought a renewed energy to our group, and we look forward to him returning behind the bench to continue guiding our team for the foreseeable future.

In 2004, St. Louis won the Hart Trophy as the League's Most Valuable Player after he had 1,033 points in 1,134 games. He was a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame.
