State officials told the Associated Press on Tuesday that an elementary school teacher in Uvalde, Texas, who propped open an external door before the shooting, returned to close it before the shooter entered.
The teacher propped the door open before the shooting but closed it after she realized there was a shooter near the school, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
The propped-open door that the man entered the school through was usually closed, according to the officials.
The lawyer for the teacher told the San Antonio Express-News on Tuesday that his client had propped the door open with a rock while carrying food from a vehicle, but she quickly closed the door when she saw the shooter.
The door did not lock when it was closed.
Forbes asked for comment from the Department of Public Safety.
The Uvalde shooting left 22 people dead, including 19 children. The Texas Department of Public Safety said last week that the decision to wait over an hour to enter the classroom was driven by the mistaken belief that the incident had turned into a barricaded-suspect scenario. Uvalde's city and school district police departments have stopped cooperating with the state.
Local police are talking to the Texas school shooting investigation.
