Someone may have tried to jam communications signals at a Chinese space launch center.

The Beijing Daily is reporting that researchers from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in China discovered a signal jammer on Sunday after weeks of interference.

They found a small transmitter with a small range. Regardless of why the equipment was out there, it is an ominous sign that the equipment to disrupt space launches may already be there.

Jam It

signal jamming is an old technology that has been continually updated for modern usage since radio communications became defacto military technology during World War II. Large-scale jamming operations have been in the news recently as Russia seeks to disrupt the signals of the gps device.

In the case of the Chinese space center, the people in control of said jammers can block out intended communications to disrupt operations.

The Geopolitics of it All

The timing of the device's discovery is striking given that it was discovered just before China was to send three astronauts to its new space station.

Despite the discovery of the device, China will go ahead with the launch that will take three astronauts from the space center to thegong via one of the country's Long March 2F rockets.

This kind of potential sabotage is bad and potentially devastating, and would likely be a much bigger story if it happened in the US or Europe.

The Chinese space centre found a jamming device weeks before the launch of the latest space station mission.
