The trailer for Disney+'s newest live-action adaptation of its classic animated film, "Pinocchio," was dropped on Monday morning, just a day after Disney+ revealed new information from Star Wars Celebration. The only good look you get of the puppet is in the still above, but Disney is determined to make the live-action version as much like the animated movie as possible for good or ill.
The studio that brought you the Lion King that was poorly received by critics and deemed passable for a family audience is the same studio that brought you this film. Disney can show off its ability to combine animation and live-action with the help of some actual cast members. While that could lead to a more exciting final product, putting the real-life Tom Hanks next to an animated version of Jiminy Cricket and Honest John doesn't feel like it's doing either medium any favors. The idea of having to watch the scene where the real kids turn into donkeys in 2D animation could send this version of Pinocchio into truly twisted territory. The stop-motion adaptation of the folk tale is set to release in December of this year.
The film stars Tom Hanks as Gepetto, Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as the title character, Cynthia Erivo as the Blue Fairy, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Jiminy Cricket.
On Disney+ Day, September 8, there will be a premiere of Pinocchio.
