On the anniversary of his death, President Joe Biden and his family visited the grave of his son, Beau Biden.

Beau, an Iraq War veteran, died of brain cancer on May 30, 2015, while his father was serving as vice president during the Obama administration.

The Bidens attended a service on Monday. The First Lady carried a bouquet of flowers.

The president and the first lady went to Beau's gravesite after the service. They were accompanied by Biden's granddaughters and sister.

President Biden is due to speak at Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day.

Beau served two terms as Delaware's attorney general and did a one-year tour in Iraq where he was a captain in the Delaware Army National Guard.

He said that he would run for governor of Delaware in 2016 despite his health concerns. He had been hospitalized several times, including a mild stroke in 2010 and an operation in 2013 to remove a brain injury. Two years before his death, he was diagnosed with brain cancer.

President Biden spoke about losing a child after the Uvalde school shooting in Texas.

Losing a child is like having a piece of your soul taken away.

The first wife and infant daughter of Biden were killed in a car crash in 1972.
