In a video filmed by an onlooker in the gallery, the activist was talking to visitors in French. People are destroying the Earth. Think about it. Artists tell you to think of the Earth. That is the reason I did this.

The bulletproof glass protects the painting. There was no damage to theMona Lisa.

The artwork also known as La Gioconda was created by Da Vinci over 500 years ago. The painting was stolen in 1911, had a rock thrown at it in 1956, and was the subject of a protest involving red paint in 1974. In 2009, a woman who was denied French citizenship threw a ceramic teacup at the glass.

The cultural icon is still the center of both well-wishers and meme on the internet.
