Nicol: Liverpool 'scratching their head' how they didn't win UCL final (1:32)

Steve Nicol explains how Real Madrid were able to get a differentiating goal. (1:32)

4:30 AM ET

The celebrations back in Madrid on Sunday followed a familiar script as they added LaLiga after their fifth win in nine years in the European Championship.

- Marcotti: Madrid strengthen UCL legacy with win vs. Liverpool

- Ogden: Courtois inspires Madrid to glory by denying Liverpool

- Olley: Liverpool's UCL final loss will test mental toughness

The team that did us proud was the one that showed off the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, and were greeted by thousands of people on the island.

Both teams won silverware this season.

At 4 p.m., things began in the city. The route of the open-top bus took it past many of the city's landmarks and finished in the city centre.

The squad met up in Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu. The team bus is their regular transportation, rather than an open-top parade version, for the trip around Madrid's M-30 ring road to the city's Almudena cathedral.

After posing for a photo with Madrid's archbishop, the team headed to Puerta del Sol in the heart of the city to visit the headquarters of Madrid's regional government.

There, club president Florentino Perez said their campaign was one of the greatest in the history of the European competition.

The party was in full swing in the city, with the boss of the Reds wanting to thank the fans.

Not everyone was in a celebratory mood, with Sadio Mane's future at the club very much in doubt.

It was a sad moment for Origi, who is expected to join AC Milan on a free transfer this summer.

Real Madrid made their next stop just down the road at Madrid town hall, where they joined thousands of fans waiting at Cibeles, the fountain where supporters gather to celebrate the club's frequent trophy wins.

The players had the chance to speak to the crowd, but their efforts were interrupted by fans making their feelings clear about the decision of Kylian Mbappe to snub a move to Madrid earlier this month.

Hazard, who appeared to have been thoroughly enjoying the celebrations already, also took the chance to seize the microphone and open up about his turbulent time at the Bernabeu so far.

It has been three years with a lot of injuries. He yelled "Next year I'm going to give everything for you!" before being mobbed by teammates.

Isco insisted that he would be adding to his personal tally despite not playing a single minute of this European campaign.

Yesterday they gave me a medal, so I am counting it, he said.

For much of Madrid's evening, the spotlight was on Marcelo, who had revealed a day earlier that he would be ending his 15-year spell at the club.

The Brazilian defender had five NBA-style rings, one for each of his five European titles.

The team came back to the Bernabeu at 10 p.m. The stadium was full with fans who had raced to purchase tickets earlier in the day.

After the squad had been introduced one by one, the highlight was the entry of Marcelo with the trophy.

He said that it was a happy day because they had once again won the best competition in the world. The future of Madrid is looking good with these young people.

There was still time for manager Carlo Ancelotti to grab the mic and lead the crowd in an impressive rendition of Real Madrid's most recent anthem.

Bale, a peripheral figure in his final season as a Real Madrid player, looked to be enjoying himself.

There were no whistles when his name was read out over the tannoy and when many fans had already left, Bale could still be seen signing autographs behind one of the goals.

With the celebrations over, thoughts were already turning to next season. President Perez had said earlier in the day that they would go for the 15th.
