The parents of the 10-year-old girl killed in the Uvalde elementary school mass shooting declined an invitation to meet Texas Gov. Greg Abbott.

They said he refused to support new laws to restrict access to firearms.

A 10 year old girl named Aniyah Rubio was one of the 19 children who died in the Robb Elementary School attack in Uvalde last Tuesday. The shooter was shot dead by law enforcement.

In an interview with The New York Times, her parents said Abbott's officer called to offer them a meeting the day after the shooting. They said they turned it down.

"My first thought was, "My Lexi doesn't like him", and I talked about it at home."

The kind of gun used in the Uvalde attack should be banned, according to the parents.

The deputy at the Uvalde County Sheriff's Office told the Times that he expected some members of his department to oppose his views. He argued that stricter gun laws could help prevent tragedies like Uvalde's.

She wanted to be a lawyer, so please make sure she does.

On the morning of the shooting, her parents were at the school to watch Lexi receive an honor roll award and a good citizenship award.

When the shooting broke out, Felix said he went to the scene to help his daughter but was not allowed into the classroom where the shooter was barricaded. The police response to the shooting is being investigated by the Justice Department.

Abbott was booed by parents when he went to lay flowers at the memorial to the victims of the shooting. He told reporters that he expected to make changes in the wake of the tragedy, but when asked what they would be, he said they would focus on mental health.

There are health issues that relate to those who commit gun crimes.

Texas gun laws are among the least restrictive in the US since two mass shooting in 2019.
