Long rally ends in match point for Coco Gauff (0:26)

Coco Gauff advanced to the quarterfinals of the French Open. There is a time and a place.

4:45 PM ET

None of the teenagers flinched when the French Open bids were on the line.

On Sunday, Coco Gauff, Leylah Fernandez and Carlos Alcaraz each won their matches to get one step closer to their first Grand Slam title.

It is the first time for both of them that they have made it this far in Paris. For Gauff, it is the second.

The future has arrived in tennis, and this trio shows that. How did they get here? Let's look at it.

Coco Gauff

Gauff has been seen as the sport's next big thing since she reached the fourth round as a 15-year-old at Wimbledon in 2019. She has won two singles titles and four in doubles since then, and had the best result of her career last year when she reached the quarterfinals at theRoland Garros.

Gauff confessed to having some nerves due to all of the upsets in her side of the draw, according to her doubles partner. Gauff has not shown that. She hasn't dropped a set yet. She said she has never felt more relaxed at a Grand Slam event.

Gauff said that she was enjoying the tournament and not thinking about the end result. I am enjoying the match ahead of me and I am not in control of what happens. I will either give it my best or not.

If Gauff wants to reach the first-ever major semifinal of her career, she will have to get past the reigning US Open champion and French Open finalist. The two have known each other since Gauff was in single digits and they played against one another for the first time on tour at the US Open in September. Gauff admitted on Sunday that she had been super nervous ahead of that match.

I think a lot of people expected a lot from me. I will approach it like any other match if I play Stephens. I have to watch that match again and see what I can learn from it.

Gauff could face Fernandez in the semifinals if she won.

Leylah Fernandez

At the US Open in 2021, Fernandez shocked the world with a run that seemed to be a come-from-nowhere run. She knocked off three top-five players, including defending champion Naomi Osaka. She made it clear that she was a player to watch, even though she fell to Emma.

In the third and fourth rounds of the French Open, she defeated former French Open semifinalists, including reigning Olympic champion Belinda Bencic. When it was over, she could not hide her emotions, as she won five of the last six games.

I still have something to prove, every time I step out on the court, he said after the match. I still have a lot to show to the people, so that they can enjoy the tennis match.

In the quarterfinals on Tuesday, he will face the surging Martina Trevisan. Trevisan made a surprise run to the French Open quarters in 2020 and then won the Morocco Open last week. The two have never played before, but Fernandez said she was looking forward to facing another left-handed player.

I think winning the French Open is a long way from here, and I just want to enjoy today's win and get ready for my next match.

No matter what happens this week, she will improve to a career-high ranking. She is expected to rise to 14 and a win over Trevisan would put her outside of the top 10.

Carlos Alcaraz

He made a name for himself in the third round of the US Open, where he defeated No. 3 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in a five-set match.

Alcaraz has won four titles this season, two at the Masters 1000 level. He has not lost since mid-April. He is now ranked a career-high No. 6 and may be playing even better than that number suggests.

In Paris, he faced a challenge in the second round against Albert Ramos-Vinolas, but he found a way to win, and has since been nothing short of dominant. He beat Sebastian Korda in the third round, the last man to have beaten him this season, and had little trouble with Karen Khachanov on Sunday.

While all eyes are on who Alcaraz could potentially meet in the semifinals, he must first get past Alexander Zverev. They have played against each other three times, with Alcaraz winning the most recent meeting in the Madrid final. He was called "the best in the world right now" by Zverev.

He has downplayed the expectations and hopes for a match with either Nadal or Djokovic, but he seems to be aware of them.

If I win, I play against one of them. It is different to play against them in the Masters 1000 or another tournament, but I am ready.

There is a chance that there will be five teenagers in the quarterfinals in Paris on Monday, with two of them looking to punch their tickets as well.

It has been a career-best major for both young players. In the second round, she knocked off Simona Halep, a former champion, and hadn't lost a game against Alize Cornet, a home favorite, before the home favorite retired with injury in the second set of their third-round match.

He has yet to look back on his opening-round victory against Denis Shapovalov, which was the first major victory of his career. He has not lost a set at the tournament.

Getting to the quarters will be difficult for either of them. The monumental challenge against world No. 1 Iga Swiatek is what Zheng has to face.
