Tom Cruise in a promotional poster for Top Gun: Maverick.

Tom Cruise will return to the big screen in the year 2022. The sequel to Tony Scott's 1986 film brings back Cruise's hypercompetent Navy airman Pete and Mitchell. Both critics and regular folks alike have taken notice of it. It is one of the best roles Cruise has ever played.

It's no surprise that Maverick is doing well for its first weekend. The film is expected to make $150 million by the end of the holiday weekend in North America. The film made an impressive $248 million across the globe as of Sunday morning. The $65 million opening of the 2005 War of the Worlds remake was Cruise's best box office debut in his 40-year career. It is the first film of his career to reach $100 million domestically. The film has yet to break the Memorial Day opening record held by Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. This is shaping up to be a big win for the lead actor.

Bob's Burgers Movie is the big release of the weekend. With solid reviews of its own, the theatrical release for Fox's animated underdog has currently earned $12.6 million in North America, with the expectation that it will reach at least 15 million by weekend's end. Pitting this film against Cruise seems risky, but the Bob's fans have kept the show alive for 13 seasons and counting, and The Bad Guys remains its only real animated competition until Lightyear hits in June. It can be used as a counterbalance to beach football and fighter jets.

Cruise has made it clear that he doesn't want Maverick to follow in the footsteps of other big blockbusters and go straight to streaming, or have a shortened theatrical window before jumping ship over to Paramount+. The fact that the film was shot practically and that Cruise had the actors train to fly actual fighter jets has boosted interest in the film. The film received a five-minute standing ovation at its premiere at the festival, and Cruise cried when he was awarded with a Palme d'Or. This is all for a sequel that many thought wouldn't see the light of day. The next two Mission: Impossible movies are going to have higher openings, if this movie is any indication.
