Teenagers Coco Gauff and Leylah Fernandez advanced to the French Open quarter-finals.
The first Canadian to make the last eight at the French Open was the winner of the match against the opponent.
The American was beaten by the runner-up in the US Open.
Gauff, an 18-year-old, overcame a tight first set against Mertens before winning in the second.
For the second year in a row, the American is through to the quarter-finals in Paris, and will face either a fellow American or a Swiss.
Gauff said in her on-court interview that she is having the most fun she has ever had at a tournament because she is fighting for every point.
The 17th seed had to fight harder for her victory, forced into a deciding set by the 27th seed.
It was a very complicated match, but I was happy to win, I lost in the final of the US Open last year.
She will face the unseeded Italian for a place in the semi-finals.
The Italian grinned at match point.
It was weird that I was smiling, but it helped me a lot when I needed to have more patience and be more nervous.
I smile and feel better. It is not easy to do because the situation is very tough, but I practice it a lot.
