President Joe Biden met with some of the families of the children who died at the elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, on Sunday.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott, a Republican who frequently criticizes the Democratic president over immigration at the southern US border, greeted Biden in Uvalde. The memorial at the school where 19 children and two teachers were killed was Biden's first stop.

In the wake of the killing, President Harris called for a ban on assault weapons and enhanced background checks for firearm purchases, while Biden urged Americans to stand up to the gun lobby.

In the face of such destructive forces, we have to stand stronger.

He said that we can finally do what we have to do to protect the lives of the people and of our children, before linking the Uvalde shooting to a rise in white supremacy.

Biden will meet with grieving families in Uvalde.

There is too much violence, too much fear, and too much grief in the United States of America.

Assault Weapons

There have been gun violence in Uvalde and Buffalo. Harris said on Saturday that there have been over 200 mass shootings to date.

We're not waiting to figure out what the solution looks like. Harris told reporters in Buffalo, New York, after attending the funeral for a victim of the mass shooting that they were not looking for a vaccine. Let's have an assault weapons ban.

The 10-year federal law banning assault weapons for civilian use expired in 2004, reflecting the political difficulty of passing gun-control legislation.

The National Rifle Association's annual convention in Houston, where a series of speakers on Friday, including former President Donald Trump, rejected tighter gun control and defended the right to bear arms, coincides with Biden's visit to Uvalde.
