Stephen A.: Last place of AFC East is reserved for the New York Jets (2:26)

Stephen A. Smith was angry with Marcus Spears for suggesting that the Pats could finish last in the East. There is a time and a place for it.

There are quick-hit thoughts and notes about the New England Patriots and the National Football League.

1. Bill is 70 years old. It was the same as always.

There were a lot of things that the media learned from the first look at the spring practice.

No head coach in the history of the NFL has ever won a Super Bowl after their 70th birthday, and that's why his tank looks full. The same thing happened at a 2012 practice and a 2002 practice.

He might have been more involved with the teaching at the core of spring practices.

There was a life threatening situation for Vinny Curry.

When people ask me what Bill is like, I always say that he is the model of consistency.

He continues to come in here, Day 1 of the OTAs, for many years, and it is the same intensity.

Including his stint in Cleveland from 1991 to95), this is the 48th and 28th seasons that Bill Belichick has been a head coach. His passion for the basics, details and every facet of football still exists, as evidenced by one moment in practice when he pulled practice-squad receiver Malcolm Perry aside, flashed his hands in front of him, and discussed how he should attack the ball.

There is a chance that he will be on the 53-man roster when the season begins, but he will probably not be a starter.

It was the peak of the man.

The small things over and over again are the basics. McCourty has seen that over and over again. I think getting an opportunity to play for him as a player has made me a better player.

The heavy involvement with the offense in Monday's practice amplified the challenges that Belichick has to overcome. There is a significant change on the coaching staff with Joe Judge working with quarterbacks and MattPatricia working with the offensive line.

At practice, it was obvious that the three of them were sharing the role until further notice.

Tedy Bruschi is upset that the Pats are not naming an offensive coach.

Is there a concern that he could be spread too thin? Those around him don't see it.

Even though he's older, Jerod said he doesn't even think he sleeps. You never know where you will find him.

2. According to former New England fullback Jakob Johnson, the Pats might be de-emphasizing the traditional position in their offense, but that doesn't mean they aren't welcoming those who play the position to Gillette Stadium. The club hosted a guest last week, and he addressed the players in a full-squad meeting.

He is a three-time Super Bowl champion. The story of perseverance that any current player can tell is that of his football journey, which began at Brown University and ended in the United Football League.

3. With starting left tackle Isaiah Wynn not at voluntary offseason practices last week, veteran Trent Brown flipped to that side, with swing tackle Justin Herron elevated as the top right tackle. Brown played right tackle after returning to the team in 2021. If Wynn is out, could Brown return to left tackle permanently, considering the chemistry he has with Cole Strange? At the very least, it is a question that the O-line coaches will probably be asking.

4. Wynn is an example of the challenges that teams have to contend with when it comes to deciding on the fifth-year option for first-round picks. Wynn was guaranteed a salary of $10.4 million for the next two seasons when the Pats picked up his option in May 2021. At the time, the decision-making seemed reasonable, considering the premium position Wynn plays. One wonders if there is some internal regret, as Wynn's $10.4 million cap charge could create some much-needed space, given the linemen the team now has in place.

5. One example from Monday's practice highlighted the point that Jones leadership continues to evolve. When a player makes an error, the entire unit is often sent on a lap as a punishment. When Jones appeared to have a mental breakdown at the line of scrimmage, which seemed to affect the offense lining up correctly, he called out loudly to everyone that it was on him before taking off for a full-unit lap.

The offensive plan of the New England Patriots is being questioned by Dan Orlovsky.

6. The trade in which the Pats traded a third-round pick to the Carolinas for a fourth- and third-round pick was a result of the aggressiveness of the coach. The in-house video team shows that the Carolinas were contacted by the New England team to gauge their interest in the pick and asked for their second-round pick in the process. Asking for the moon is probably where things end up.

7. Last week, when he met with reporters, he opened by publicly sending his sympathies to the family of the legendary player. He attended the wake of Cappelletti a few days prior, a classy gesture.

There are 8. The former quarterbacks coach for the team was in town last week and a guest at practice. He is in his second season as the University of Arizona head coach. The time of year when the Pats host college coaches can be a good time to exchange information and learn from each other.

There are 9. In each of the past 18 seasons, the Pats have had at least one undrafted free agent make the opening-day 53-man roster. Russey was guaranteed $180,000 by the team on one of their 30 pre-draft visits at Gillette Stadium. Russey has a chance to make a good impression this spring as starting center David Andrews is still recovering from shoulder surgery.

10. Did you know? The team will play four prime-time games in a row for the first time. The last team to play in four straight prime-time games was the Pittsburgh Steelers.
