The police response to the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, at least a dozen times, is being questioned by GOP Sen. John Cornyn.

The second guessing and finger pointing among state and local law enforcement is destructive and unfair.

Cornyn's comments were added to an earlier post from Texas Rep. Tony Gonzalez that said the Uvalde police department had stopped a plot by two teenage boys to commit a shooting at Uvalde High School. The teenagers were arrested.

Cornyn said that complex scenarios require split second decisions.

Nineteen students and two teachers were killed and 17 others were wounded when an 18-year-old man barricaded himself in a classroom. The officers at the scene failed to engage the shooter and delayed entering the school.

The police response to the shooting has been changed many times, first claiming that an officer confronted the shooter, then that the shooter was not confronted, and finally that officers were told to stand down.

The story has changed multiple times already, as you know, Sen. Cornyn replied to a reporter's question about how to handle officer misjudgment. We need a thorough investigation and to nail down facts before we reach a conclusion. Accountability should follow.
