Kaplan tells Space.com that the inspiration came from themes and things going on in modern society. It seems like technology is moving fast and that it is an up-and-coming situation. I thought it would be interesting to use a robot drama to show that humans are coming for their jobs in a way.
The Metal Society takes us into a future world where humans have failed. There is an inherent sociological tension in the fact that humans are being brought back to life by machines. That allows me to look at how we seem to be more divided as a human being than ever before. We have seen sci-fi stories that look at robot boxing before, but this was a chance to do it in a more thought- provoking way.
Kaplan admits that the project to find the right artist was very ambitious.
We are creating a world that is completely inhabited by all sorts of different robots and futuristic cities, but also the human world, where it is more Earth-feel, and we want to do that in a way that is more Earth-feel. Guilherme Balbi is a new comic book writer and he had a great blend of sci-fi environments with strong character work.
Marco Lesko is the colorist who is doing the colors on theBlade Runner series. He put this evocative emotion behind the tones and was comfortable with them. Troy Peteri, our letterer, does an amazing job of balancing all the lettering styles required. We wanted to bring the reader into the world by playing with layout and the comics medium.
Metal Society #1 is available now at comic shops and digital platforms with brilliant variant covers by Alan Quah, Qistina Khalidah, and Mateus Manhan.
