Scientists said this week that humans might be smart enough to live on the moon within the next 200 years.
A team of eight researchers published a study in the preprint journal Arxiv that said humanity could become a Kardashev Type I Civilization by the year 2663.
The Kardashev model was created in 1964 to assess how close a civilization is to conquering space and interplanetary travel. The researchers said humans have to learn how to harness renewable energy before we hit the first milestone.
A type I civilization is aplanetary civilization that has harnessed all of the major energy forms on its home planet. Humans don't qualify because they haven't conquered nuclear and renewable energy sources.
The type II civilizations must be able to obtain and store all the energy their parent star releases. Agalactic civilization is a type of civilization that can access and control the energy of the entire universe.
Humans will eventually need to escape Earth to survive a future event, according to a study. If their warnings about Earth's limited resources are true, it will be another reason to fight climate change and invest in new energy sources before it's too late.
We need to harness renewable and nuclear energy to leave our planet for good. We need those investments to prevent mass extinction events and other climate disasters.
We could save two birds with one stone.
