Ted Cruz was confronted at a restaurant after his appearance at the National Rifle Association convention.

The tense exchange came days after an 18-year-old killed 19 school children and two teachers in Uvalde, Texas.

Why did you speak? Why did you come to the convention? 19 children died. The video shows Benjamin Hernandez yelling at Cruz, who waved while he was dragged away by security.

He ran for Congress to represent parts of Houston.

A longer video was posted by Indivisible Houston, a political advocacy organization that is a board member. The video shows the beginning of the exchange, where Cruz posed for a photo with the man before he asked why Cruz wouldn't support stricter gun control laws.

The Uvalde shooter waited until the day he was 18 to purchase several firearms. The shooter purchased two assault weapons after his 18th birthday.

Cruz said that the background checks wouldn't have stopped the shooter.

At different points in the video, Cruz told him not to listen to him and that he didn't know what he was talking about.

He told Insider that he saw Cruz walk in while he was at the restaurant. The senator got up right away after he was asked if he would pose for a photo.

He doesn't allow us to engage him in open public forums. This is one of the ways we can reach him.

If it takes Ted Cruz, I have to do this because there are people that are really suffering.

The annual meeting of the National Rifle Association drew protests in Houston. Several other top speakers dropped out, including Gov. Greg Abbott and Sen. John Cornyn.

Abbott was in person to Uvalde.

Ted Cruz still shows up to the convention, an organization that actively blocks legislation that can help end gun violence in this country. I mean, that is just beyond belief.

The parents of the slain children in Uvalde, as well as his own child, were thinking of them during the confrontation with Cruz.

I am a new father. I have a child. This is different. I just want to know what you are doing as a senator. He was frustrated when Cruz lambasted Democrats and the media in his responses. Where do you stand? What do you bring to the table?

Cruz did not respond to Insider's request for comment on Saturday. An automated message from his senate office said his voicemail was full.

If politicians don't take action on mass shootings, we have to confront them.

The moment is now, according to the man. It is the right time. It is time to stop the next one.
