Russia's Ministry of Defense claimed Saturday that it captured the strategic city of Lyman in eastern Ukraine, as Russian forces seek to encircle thousands of Ukrainian troops in the nearby city of Severodonetsk.
The town of Krasny Lyman has been completely liberated from Ukrainian nationalists, according to a statement from Russia's Ministry of Defense.
The British Defense Ministry said that Russia's control of Lyman gave it access to key bridges over the Siversky Donets river.
If Russia captured the town of Lyman, it would give them control of the entire Lu, as it is on the road leading to other populous cities in the Donetsk region.
Russian troops began assaults on built up areas of the town on Friday without fully encircling the town, meaning they will likely struggle to take ground in the city itself.
Serhiy Hayday, the head of the Luhansk regional military administration, said Saturday that the city was not cut off, but was under intense shelling.
Hayday told the New York Times that Russian troops had seized the city's bus station and largest hotel, but had not taken city hall.
Arif Bagirov, a Ukranian man, said he was able to escape from Russia on his bike. Bagirov said he plans to rest once he reaches Kyiv.
30,000. Estimates from the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense show how many troops Russian forces have lost.
Russia has scaled back its invasion goals after meeting strong Ukrainian resistance and is now focused on controlling the eastern Donbas region. On the eastern side of the Donets river is the last major city that Ukraine controls. The Russian military has massed some of its best remaining units to collapse the pocket around the Ukrainian brigades. The mayor reminded him of the attack on Mariupol, a southeastern port city which faced heavy bombardment for weeks. Mariupol was surrendered by the Ukrainians to Russia in order to create a land bridge from the peninsula to the region.
