Breeze Airways is going across the country.
Breeze, the brainchild of JetBlue Airways founder David Neeleman, operated its first-ever flight on Wednesday. Breeze will operate 17 transcontinental routes this summer, and the first journey took five and half hours from Richmond to San Francisco.
Breeze founder and CEO David Neeleman said in a press release that the A220-300 is a game-changer for them as they can now serve guests coast-to-coast.
Breeze only operated the regional jet on short and medium-haul flights along the East Coast, but recently expanded its network with flights from Utah to San Francisco on the West Coast.
Breeze has 80 A 220 on order and the option for 40 more, which will be the transcontinental workhorse. Providence, Rhode Island, Los Angeles and Charleston, South Carolina, will be connected to Las Vegas on 17 routes this summer. The carrier has a unique scheduling strategy that includes a stop, but does not require layover passengers to change planes.
The route from Charleston to Las Vegas will include stops in cities such as Syracuse, New York and Richmond. Customers can still connect between two cities on days when direct flights do not operate, according to a Breeze spokesman.
It is rare for budget airlines to have three classes in the A 220s. Other carriers like Avelo Airlines and Frontier Airlines offer all-economy cabins with some extra legroom seats, though they don't recline or get special perks like bags or snacks.
Breeze's first class does come with the luxuries typically seen on a mainline carrier's business class. The Nicest cabin on the carrier has a reclinable seat with 39 inches of pitch, a leg rest, power ports, storage space, a large tray table, and a cupholder. The fare comes with priority boarding, a carry-on, an inflight drink and snack, and two checked bags.
Breeze has two fare classes that are economy sections in a 2x3 configuration. The same perks as Nicest, minus the second checked bag, can be found in Nicer. Nice is the cheapest fare that only comes with a personal item and a seat with 30 inches of pitch.
Breeze has 17 A 220 transcontinental routes.
