Donald Trump mocked Texas Governor Greg Abbott for not appearing in person at a National Rifle Association conference in Houston Friday, just days after the deadly shooting in the governor's home state.
Despite the tragic events in Uvalde, Texas, where a man killed 19 children and two teachers at an elementary school, the former president and several other Republican politicians appeared at the event. Abbott appeared in a pre-recorded video and gave a press conference in Uvalde, but he backed out of his scheduled appearance.
Unlike some, I did not disappoint you by not showing up.
The former president spoke for nearly an hour, often shifting from the topic of guns to his past presidency. The name of the victims killed in the Robb Elementary massacre was read by him while a gong chimed in the background.
The conference drew scores of protesters, including many children, calling for gun reform measures.
The two Texas Republicans said they couldn't attend the conference. Cornyn said he had an "unexpected change in his schedule" and that he wouldn't make it back in time.
The shooting was a product of a deranged criminal, according to a statement from the National Rifle Association.
As we gather in Houston, we will reflect on these events, pray for the victims, recognize our patriotic members, and pledge to redouble our commitment to making our schools secure.
