Industrial Light and Magic has had an impact on your life if you are reading a site like io9 or Gizmodo. The company was created by George Lucas to help him make a little film called Star Wars, and has been at the forefront of visual and special effects ever since. The work of Ilm has shaped our imaginations, with a few notable exceptions, such as the Lord of the Rings.
Light & Magic is a six-part documentary series coming to Disney+. The series is directed by Lawrence Kasdan. At Star Wars Celebration, Kasdan and several of the people who took part in the documentary took the stage to show the first clips from the film.
The documentary seems to have something for everyone who loves movies in general, not just Star Wars, and that was something that stood out to me. My favorite ship is the Millennium Falcon, and I love the scenes on Hoth. The most instantly recognizable ship in the Star Wars universe was designed by Johnston. The trick is to make sure George likes the same one. I asked if we should put it on the side. I was able to find something personal in this panel, even though this is a story that has been told a million times.
Tipptett explained that George wanted to see some designs for the Tauntaun in Empire Strikes Back. George picked one up and said, "Make him a bit like a cat." I was sold on the show. It is going to be quite the journey down memory lane.
Disney+ will have Light and Magic on July 27.
