Herta rolled his car during the final practice of the Indianapolis 500. The star driver for the team was uninjured in the most significant crash in the build up to The GreatestSpectacle in Racing.

Herta said that he was going too fast for that corner.

Herta will need a backup for Sunday's race after the crash with 25 minutes left in the race. He blew an engine in his car and will start 25th for the race.

When asked how he felt after leaving the infield care center, Herta said, "A little sad for that race car."

The driver from California was talking on his radio while his car was rolling. Bryan radioed for Herta to stay put and be strapped in until emergency crews could free him from the car.

His father went to the garage to make sure the backup car was ready.

I guess the aeroscreen is part of that. The safety crew and the sidepods on the cars are very durable. That was a big hit. The safety crews flipped me back over very quickly.

David Malukas crashed after contact with Santino Ferrucci. Malukas is the youngest driver in the field. Ferrucci was fined for avoidable contact.

Malukas said that it was one of the biggest hits he had.

Herta scored his first win of the season earlier this month when he drove through the rain on the road course at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Herta started on the front row and led 13 laps before his strategy backfired and he faded to a disappointing 16th-place finish.

Friday's practice was about getting the last little bits balanced right, he said.

That was before the crash.

Herta said he was not too worried about the race.

Tony Kanaan was the leader of practice. The pole sitter was third-fastest and seven-time NASCAR champion Johnson was seventh as the cars from the same team had four cars in the top seven. Alex Palou was the 14th slowest of the group.

We had a good car all month. Kanaan said that they didn't go out and say let's be fastest on Carb Day. We had a good car for the entire month. You look at your teammates.

Johnson has been all over the place this month, from the track to the late-night talk-show circuit as he prepares for his first Indy 500. He was a part of NBC Sports coverage at Indy.

Johnson said that he wanted to experience it all.
