A dinosaur terrorizes the cast in a plane.

It has been seven years since I last saw Jurassic Park III and I wonder if I hated it at the time. I live-streamed it and I hated everything I saw. I was not looking forward to watching the film again, but I found myself enjoying it so much that I decided to watch it again.

I've been watching each film in the franchise with fresh eyes in the lead-up to the June 10 release of the movie. The Lost World was the third film, and now we are here. The third film in the series was released in 2001 and is mostly forgotten. It did well at the box office but was the lowest-grossing movie in the franchise. It would take over a decade for interest in the franchise to return after it was released. This film is good but not great, bad but fun, all of which leads one to believe it is.

Which, for the most part, is correct. The movie is like a movie on fast forward. In the first 30 minutes, you get cast reunions, John Williams' classic musical themes, and new twists on dino-mythology. The characters are attacked by dinosaurs and then fight each other on site B. The film begins like a greatest hits album and the story hasn't even been developed yet.

The story centers on a young boy named Eric who goes parasailing with his step dad but the boat is attacked and they go missing. Eric's parents, played by William H. Macy and Téa Leoni, are going to recruit Alan Grant to help them on a flying tour over the island. They want him to guide them to the island so they can save their son.

There are a few things here. I had forgotten that Laura Dern is back in this movie. I didn't recall it in my memory. It was great to see her and Grant talking about dinosaurs at the beginning of the movie and it gave me a boost. It already had since Sam Neill came back. Grant said nothing in the world could get him to go back to the island and the promise of money did just that in the next scene. It is a betrayal of a beloved character and a major black mark on the movie. I didn't think I could get around the last time I watched it.

I will address it, the one moment everyone remembers, or at least has been reminded of. The true legacy of the movie is when Grant dreams that a velociraptor speaks to him and says "Alan!", it's super goofy, more than a little out of place. You realize that the moment has a purpose when you watch the movie again. Grant and his team are working on a theory that would change history and make raptors the dominant species on the planet if not for their existence. It's a fascinating, albeit silly, subplot, but it's seeding throughout the entire movie leading to a big third act payoff. I can forgive the dumb, meme-worthy moment after the fact. It works better in the situation.

Grant in the middle of a raptor pack.

There is a big plot hole that bugs me from the beginning. Grant realized that Macy and Leoni's characters lied to him about everything and that they were never going to pay him. Grant, come on! How stupid can you be? Make sure the check is clear.

Once that passes, the park gets exciting and stays there. We get big-ass dinosaurs attacking the humans and attacking each other, good storylines for beloved dinosaurs like the raptors, and plenty of new dinosaurs to fear like the pterodactyls. The second act of The Lost World is more measured than the third.

The plot is simple and related to something in this case, parents finding a child, which is noteworthy. A broken family dealing with a crisis blossoms into a more emotional tale. The power of family is the subject of the third film in the series. The raptors have a story about family. You begin to get a familiar feeling when you add that message to the movie's strong point of view on the dinosaurs and Grant in the middle of it all. Hmm. What could it be? Yes, the first park. A simple story with human emotion that gets messed up, but also saved by dinosaurs.

I don't want to give too much credit to the movie. It has a lot of fun, innovative action scenes, but they are very chaotic and hard to follow. Spielberg's action scenes run around the area. The setup to get to the island can be hard to overlook. This film is more of a solo movie than a sequel. Both films tell a new chapter in the story with the same characters, locations, dinosaurs, etc., but neither answers any of your questions from the last film. Grant mentions the events of San Diego in the film, but that's it. We don't know if InGen was sued. We don't know if the T-Rex came back. We don't know if the baby T-Rex grew up. The last film's only link to the story is that they share a location and one mention. It's similar to how The Lost World handled the original film, and is a reason why these sequels are so bad.

If you don't expect much,Jurassic Park III is very entertaining. The flaws are obvious but so are its emotions and fun factor. It knows what the audience wants from a movie and gives it to them over and over again. I can't believe I'm going to say this. I like the movies.

Like the previous two, the third film in the series is currently streaming on HBO Max.

The rebirth of the franchise will be based on the hit movie,Jurassic World.
