Notts County manager Ian Burchnall during the team's play-off semi-final with Grimsby Town
Ian Burchnall twice guided Notts County to the National League play-offs

Ian Burchnall is the new head coach of Forest Green Rovers.

The 39-year-old takes charge of the club as they move up to League One.

He takes over from Rob Edwards, who was appointed the manager of the Hornets earlier this month.

The team was fifth in the National League this year under the leadership of Burchnall.

He took Notts County to the National League play-offs for the second year in a row, but they were beaten in the semi-finals by Torquay United and the same time by Grimsby Town.

I am really excited to be a part of what is an exciting chapter in the club's history, and I'm happy to be a part of it.

The challenge of football in League One was too good to turn down, especially at a progressive and forward- thinking club, and I am grateful for the opportunity to come and lead the club.

After working as an assistant to Brian Deane at a Norwegian side, Burchnall got his first taste of being a manager.

He replaced Graham Potter as boss of Swedish side Ostersunds FK a year after taking over at Viking FC.

Dale Vince, Forest Green Rovers chairman, said they are all excited to have Ian at the club and look forward to their first season together in League One.

Vince said that negotiations had taken place behind our backs, but he praised the work of the people at Notts County.

Big credit to Notts County for the way they handled this, we have shown how moves in football can still get done properly and above board.

A statement from the Notts County board said they already have a "ready-made shortlist" of candidates to replace Burchnall and that "negotiations are progressing well".
