Zion willing to sign extension with Pelicans (1:34)

Zion wants to stay in New Orleans. The song is titled "1:34."

4:30 PM ET

The New Orleans Pelicans said that Zion was cleared to play progression without any restrictions.

The announcement clears the way for Williamson to work out unrestricted this summer as he prepares for the 2022-23 season. He missed the entire season after breaking his foot during workouts last summer.

There was hope that he could have played this season. If the eighth-seeded New Orleans made a deep run in the playoffs, there was a chance that they could have gotten revenge on the top-seeded Phoenix Suns.

The update comes after the Pelicans said that recent images showed continued improvement in the right foot. In the three years since his NBA debut, he has played only 85 games because of injuries. His debut was delayed by a torn meniscus in his right knee, but he played 24 in his first season.

Williams is eligible to sign a five-year, $186 million extension with New Orleans this summer. When asked about the extension on April 29 when the Pelicans did exit interviews, Williamson said, "Of course." I would not be able to sign it quickly.

The 2021-22 season was a rough one because of the injury that included him taking time to rehabilitate in Portland. He said he could see the building of something when he came back in March.

Being real, it sucks to be on the sideline. It's just seeing the potential. There are a lot of great pieces. I am excited to play with those guys.

In April, he was able to play 5-on-5 full-court games with staffers and end-of-the-bench players, but never made it back to the court for a game.
