Julia Collins, co-founder of Zume Pizza, founded Planet FWD, a carbon-assessment startup, in order to develop technology that will allow the consumer products industry to more accurately measure and reduce their carbon footprint.

We profiled Collins when she announced a $2.7 million seed round for Planet FWD to look at regenerative agriculture. The Moonshot Snacks brand was launched later that year.

Collins learned how difficult it was to develop a product that is carbon neutral when she was working with Planet FWD.

She said that it was hard to understand the company's carbon footprint as a company. It was difficult to understand how to reduce emissions. It's really hard to get to carbon neutral, and we wanted to understand how to purchase high-quality carbon offsets.

The carbon-management technology platform that emerged from those learnings was a way for consumer brands to create a climate-friendly company and products more easily by being able to measure, reduce and neutralize emissions and report its carbon footprint.

With another $2.5 million in funding, Julia Collins’ Planet FWD launches climate-friendly snack brand

If your company wants to launch a line of granola bars that is as low in emissions as possible, you can use Planet's emissions-reduction engine during the product-development phase to understand how to change your supplier or your packaging supplier to a more efficient method.

Imagine the next generation of products that can be produced with low emissions because we have made it easy for customers to understand how to calculate carbon and carbon equivalent during product development.

The GHG Protocol Scope 3 emissions modeling capabilities are provided by the company. Scope 3 emissions account for up to 89% of emissions for consumer products.

There are less than 100 months left to reach the global goal of cutting at least 40% of greenhouse gas emissions from 1990 levels. She said that household consumption of things like food, which impacts land, energy and water, account for 40% of global emissions.

The regulatory framework is being strengthened by the emerging consumer appetite for sustainable and climate friendly products. New ESG is becoming an important part of the way that companies are able to access financial instruments.

The past year has been one of growth. Collins did not go into detail about the company's growth metrics, but she did say that the company is working with 25 customers.

Planet FWD, aided by an acquisition of climate tech startup CleanMetrics in 2021, also has the largest Life Cycle Analysis database for agricultural production systems in North America.

The Series A is co-led by Acre Venture Partners and Congruent Venture and includes participation from existing investors. The organization has raised over $16 million.

The company will use the new funding to build out its climate science team. It will support existing and new customers and go into product development.

Planet FWD is a vertically oriented solution because of the complexity of the supply chains.
