People visit the Apple Store in Grand Central Terminal on April 18, 2022 in New York City.

According to a new report from the Wall Street Journal, Apple is planning to raise its minimum wage to $22 per hour. The raise is modest for many cities, since some Apple employees can make as little as $17 per hour in New York and San Francisco. During the last fiscal year, Apple made $366 billion in revenue.

The pay minimums could be set higher in different markets within the U.S., according to the Journal report. Apple didn't immediately respond to questions about how much higher minimums could be in different cities.

The modest pay raise for Apple workers at retails stores is likely a response to both extreme inflation and unionization efforts. The United States is the only wealthy country in the world without a guaranteed minimum wage.

Apple has discouraged workers from joining a union, trotting out the same anti-union garbage that every other tech company has tried. An internal video showing the company's hostility to unions was leaked this week.

There has been an increase in union drives across the country. Amazon has been violating labor laws in order to keep its workers from unionizing. President Joe Biden invited Chris Smalls, the most well known union leader at Amazon, to the White House to meet him. Smalls wore a t-shirt that said " eat the rich" while testifying in front of a Congressional committee. Amazon has been fighting tooth and nail to make sure its workers don't form a union, an action that could deliver real benefits to its staff.

Why are workers more interested in unions now than a decade ago? Workers have gained an advantage because businesses have struggled to find workers. There are fewer workers to fill the low paid roles where people were most vulnerable to the H1N1 epidemic.

The worker shortage isn't all about the Pandemic, but many people have realized that the companies they work for aren't going to look out for their interests in the wake of so many dead Americans. Workers need to do that for themselves. The best way to do that is to join a union.
