The first in-person World Economic Forum since the start of the Covid-19 epidemic brought with it renewed health concerns.

A recent outbreak of monkeypox, a rare viral infection endemic to Africa, has baffled doctors and scientists as cases have surged across Europe, North America, Australia and the Middle East.

The number of confirmed and suspected cases of the disease has doubled since the start of the conference. There are a number of symptoms such as rash, headaches, muscle ache, swelling and back pain.

Business leaders at the conference said they don't think the virus poses a risk like the coronaviruses.

The CEO of Pfizer said Wednesday that he wouldn't worry about the spike in cases, noting that current data suggests monkeypox doesn't transmit as easily as other viruses.

Albert Bourla told CNBC that some treatments already exist to minimize the impact of the virus.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Monday that the monkeypox virus is not Covid, and that it does not transmit easily through the air and respiratory tracts.

The likelihood of a Covid-style outbreak is very low according to Jeremy Farrar, director of global health charity Wellcome.

Is it a Covid-style risk? He said Monday that he didn't believe it was.

The recent outbreak of the monkeypox virus was atypical, but not a cause for concern for the general public. He said that public health experts are taking the surge seriously.

That isn't the same as saying public health people shouldn't be worried. It isn't the same as saying we must not act quickly.

According to the World Health Organization, recent reported cases have no links to travel from endemic African countries. The public health body said Monday that the majority of cases are spread through sex and particularly by men who have sex with other men.

There is more work to be done to figure out the cause of the outbreak, with more cases likely until that happens, according to the CEO of the vaccine alliance.

People would take that as normal if it was a small outbreak in Central Africa or West Africa. It's not unusual to see transmission person-to-person in those settings.

To have it appear now means we have to figure out what's happening.

We don't know what that is and how severe it will be. It's likely that we're going to see more cases.
