The hometown of the left-handed pitcher is a small community west of San Antonio. His parents and a brother still reside in Uvalde, and he attended school in the building where the shooting occurred.
Raley said it was a small town. My brother lives there with his wife and daughter. It hits close to home.
Raley was in the locker room at the stadium when he heard about the killings at his old school.
Raley made it clear that he did not want to discuss the political implications of the shooting.
I heard something but didn't follow up because we were about 40 minutes before the game. He said he had to talk to his parents to get a bit of background.
I went to that school. Raley said that he was feeling for the community because he walked those halls. I don't know if there is anything I can do. It will take time.
Raley, a two-sport star at Uvalde High School, has not lived in his hometown since he was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in 2009. His wife Rachel and their three daughters live in College Station, Texas.
He said that it was the biggest city west of San Antonio. Not a lot there.
Raley said that his hesitancy to discuss the tragedy publicly is due to all the unanswered questions.
It is a tragedy. The pitcher said that growing up there and going to that school made him feel bad for the families.
Raley is with the team. The left-handed relief pitcher was perfect in 14 appearances and had a 2.25 earned run average. He made his major league debut with the Cubs in 2012 and has also pitched for the Cincinnati Reds and Houston Astros.
