According to The Athletic's Tashan Reed, a judge dismissed the motion to dismiss a lawsuit filed by former Las Vegas Raiders head coach Jon Gruden.
The case could now go to discovery and Reed speculated that the league might want to reach a settlement.
He resigned from his post in October of last year after emails surfaced in which he used anti-gay, racist and misogynistic language. The workplace culture of the Washington Commanders was investigated by the NFL.
In November, Gruden filed a lawsuit against the NFL and Roger Goodell, claiming he was the victim of a malicious and orchestrated campaign.
The allegations are meritless and the NFL will vigorously defend them, according to Brian McCarthy.
The league tried to get the case moved into arbitration after it filed a motion to dismiss the suit.
It is possible that this lawsuit will open the door for damaging information to be made public.
Washington received a $10 million fine after the investigation, and the wife of the organization's founder assumed day-to-day duties. The full findings of the investigation were not given to league officials.
If the discovery phase proceeds, some of the findings could come to light.
