Texas Gov. Greg Abbott was interrupted at his news conference by Beto O'Rourke, a former Democratic Congress member.

O'Rourke, who is running to replace Abbott, said as he approached the stage that he had to say something. You are giving us nothing. When you choose to do nothing, this is totally predictable.

Abbott confirmed that 19 students from Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, and two staff members, were killed by an 18-year-old man on Tuesday in what is now the deadliest grade school shooting in the US since Sandy Hook Elementary.

Abbott praised the response of law enforcement and called the shooter an evil person.

Abbott said that local officials had stressed a problem with mental health in the community. The comments came as the US is sure to debate ways to address what has become an endemic repetition of mass shootings, a uniquely American tragedy that sparks national debate over gun control laws, but has time and again lead to no meaningful legislation in states or the federal level.

Gun violence in the US is a public health crisis according to the American Public Health Association. It is the leading cause of premature death in the country. According to data from the Gun Violence Archive, at least 17,207 people have died from gun violence this year.

Just minutes after he stated that the shooter had no known mental health history issues or criminal background, Abbott made a comment. He legally purchased the gun used in the massacre.

The governor candidate was led out of the auditorium after officials accused him of politicizing a tragedy.
