St. Louis Blues coach Craig Berube said Wednesday that the racist comments and threats directed at Colorado Avalanche center Nazem Kadri are not acceptable.
Before Game 5 in Denver, Berube said that he was not on social media. I was aware of the threat. The stuff is not racist. It is not acceptable for the St. Louis Blues or anyone else for him to have to go through that.
Kadri, who is Muslim and of Lebanese descent, was the subject of racist comments and threats after his collision with Jordan Binnington in the second round of the playoffs. Binnington, who had been outstanding in five playoff games, suffered a lower-body injury in a collision with Kadri. Binnington was ruled out for the rest of the series.
There was increased police presence around the players entrance to the ice at the Enterprise Center in Game 4 after threats were made against Kadri on social media.
The NHL department of player safety determined there was no need for supplemental discipline because Kadri wasn't called for a penalty on the play that resulted in Binnington's injury. Kadri was questioned about his role in the injury.
Look at Kadri's reputation. Kadri has had multiple suspensions, including an eight-game ban for an illegal check to the head of the St. Louis defenseman.
With Ville Husso in net for St. Louis, the Avs won Games 3 and 4 to take a 3-1 series lead, with Kadri scoring a hat trick on Monday night. Kadri said Berube's comments served as motivation after Game 4.
It started with their head coach. Kadri said that he made some comments that he wasn't a fan of.
When asked before Game 4 about the reported threats to Kadri, Berube said he had no comment.
Being a Native American myself, I have heard it all. It is not a good thing. I wanted to make sure that there was no room for it anywhere.
Hockey fans and the media criticized Berube for not commenting in light of the threats.
After Game 4, Colorado coach Bednar defended his colleague.
Bednar said that he and Berube did not have an obligation to have a comment about every question that people asked them. You are not obligated to comment on it because people want your opinion on it.
