Green, a Hollywood actor, recently launched his own collection of NFTs.
The Family Guy star says he fell for a common scam in early May, with a hacker getting away with one of his NFTs.
The timing couldn't have been worse, and some might even speculate that it's suspicious, given the juicy headlines the story has generated, conveniently drumming up free marketing for Green's show.
Green teased his show at a conference in Minneapolis over the weekend. The Bored Ape NFT was supposed to be the star of the show, but it was bought by a self-proclaimed street photographer.
Green said that he bought the ape in July of 2021, and spent the last several months developing and exploiting the intellectual property to make it into the star of the show.
In early May, Green lamented in a twit that he had fallen for a scam. Got phished and had a 4NFT stolen.
The Bored Ape, which was supposed to be the star of the show, was one of the NFTs that was stolen and later sold for $200,000 to the next buyer.
Can Green still produce his show? There isn't much of a legal precedent.
Some messy feuds have already arisen because Bored Ape Yacht Club allows its users to exploit and commercially adapt the NFTs they own.
Green maintains that a buyer who purchases stolen art with real money and refuses to return it is not entitled to exploitation usage of the underlying intellectual property.
He is not interested in making enemies and is keeping an open mind.
I will go to court, but I would prefer to meet DarkWing84 before that.
That last sentence seems suspicious. Is this a clever marketing stunt for Green's upcoming show? Is it possible that DarkWing83 and Green are the same person?
It is not out of the question, given the environment the NFT market operates in.
The fact that DarkWing84 has already sold at least two of the four NFTs originally owned by Green, means the actor would have had to arrange a number of behind-the-curtain sales to eventually recoup rights to his.
It would take a lot of work to pull off such a stunt. It might be the perfect marketing ploy in a world that is ready for NFT drama.
It was supposed to be a part of his new show.
