The Twins placed starting pitcher Joe Ryan on the injured list on Wednesday, bumping him from his upcoming turn.
Ryan was going to pitch against Kansas City. Ryan was doing OK, according to Manager Rocco Baldelli.
The right-handed pitcher, who made five starts last season after being acquired in a trade, is 5-2 with a 2.28 earned run average in eight starts this year. Ryan has a.186 opponent batting average with 42 strikeouts and 14 walks. He leads all major league rookies in wins and strikeouts.
Ryan was placed in the rotation by the Twins to make room for Smeltzer. Smeltzer made two earlier starts for the Twins, one of which he won. He was sent down for the return of Bailey Ober from the injured list, a back-and-forth move he has grown accustomed to since his debut in 2019.
It gets worse. You want to stay longer. You are playing with house money in your first year. Smeltzer said that once you get sent back down, it gets harder and harder to perform.
