Volkswagen may be the new sheriff in town when it comes to EV sales.

During an interview with CNBC at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess said that as soon as the company clears its global supply chain issues, it will become the biggest EV maker in the world.

Although he conceded thatTesla is in the lead when it comes to EV's, VW is still aiming at keeping up and probably overtaking by 2025.

It's a big claim, but given the company's recent improvements, it's not out of the question.

Rebound

The global chip shortage is still crushing the car industry, but he doesn't expect the automotive supply chain to completely rebound by the end of the year.

If the situation is not getting any worse, we should be in better shape in the second half of the year, according to the Volkswagen CEO.

Davos Dreams

VW has turned out to be a serious competitor toTesla, taking in ten percent of all electric car sales worldwide in 2021, the third highest after Chinese vehicle sales leader SAIC Motor. The company had a 21 percent market share.

In the Western market, VW is the biggest competitor to electric vehicles, so it is not impossible for it to overtake Musk's car venture.

VW has a long way to go to catch up toTesla, which sold nearly a million electric vehicles in the last two years.

Volkswagen's chief says the German car giant will sell more electric vehicles by the year 2025.
